Adolescence can be very complicated. And for eleven-year-old Riley, who has to move with her family from the American Midwest to San Francisco, where her father got a new job, this is doubly true. Like all of us, Riley is influenced by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. Emotions live on at Headquarters, which is the control center inside Riley's mind, from where they help Riley deal with the pitfalls of everyday life. As Riley and her emotions try to cope with the problems of new beginnings in San Francisco, confusion erupts at Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to take everything from the best possible side, there are disagreements between emotions about how best to deal with a new city, home, and school.
Whether it was an adventurous balloon flight high in the clouds or a big city full of monsters, Oscar-winning director Pete Docter (Up in the Clouds, Monsters Inc.) has always taken viewers to unique and imaginative places.
