Sarah enjoys her freedom in San Francisco in the nineties. She works as an illustrator for a cult queer magazine, her career begins to take off and the beautiful Donimo enters her life. But when her mother Midge begins to behave strangely and suffer from increasingly frequent memory lapses, Sarah returns to her conservative hometown in Maine. While the rest of the family turns their heads away from her mother's illness, Sarah refuses to accept what is coming. Between arguments, black humor and desperate attempts to keep the family together, she has to accept that some things simply cannot be saved. Leah Nelson's sensitive animated debut combines bold black-and-white drawing with chaotic and touching moments from family life, but also with a surprising amount of humor. The film, based on the autobiographical graphic novel by Sarah Leavitt, premiered in Cannes and was also screened at festivals in Toronto, Sydney and San Sebastián, where it won the Sebastaine Award for Best Queer Film.
